I tried MapInfo early on. By 1998, I was using a commercial product by DeLorme . . . they had one of the first 12-channel receivers packaged with NavTech street map that could be run on a laptop and could be downloaded entirely to HD so no need to spin the CD while in the car, and could be modified by end-user at leisure for changing streets on the ground , with the GPS receiver feeding text stream through the RS232 port. I hacked/intercepted the stream on the RS232 port for some of the projects that I was doing too. LOL.
Nowadays, the latest Androids and iPhone products are so fast that they really leave the dedicated GPS receivers in the dust. The ARM-based chipset architecture put into those phones now run at around 1GigHz and have licensed STAR III GPS receiver hardware built right into them, miniaturized to further speed up processing. The most impressive feat with the phone lately with my daughter in the car was actually having the phone giving me GPS directions at the same time as it acting as internet hot-spot for the laptop placed in the back seat so she could play with PBSkids.org games and video at the same time! Questions like "are we there yet dad?" don't pop up any more nowadays. Yes, the phone gets charged via the USB port on the laptop at the same too, so no need to worry about battery life.
