I've only had to drive on the freeway once with a donut spare, but I kept to 80km/h (50 mph), which I think is what was written on the tire (c900)... that was 10 years ago + the car is a 1993... I have used donuts on other occasions but just for short distances locally... I would still use our 20 year old spares locally in an emergency (rubber still looks + smells good), but in winter I carry a full sized snow tire spare. Not worth the risk!

In terms of the 6 year limit for rubber degradation, I think that's overly conservative, probably for liability reasons. We have a number of cars that don't see high mileage so the tire tread lasts for a many years. I have not noticed any issues in tires under 10 years old. Some of the older ones (which I still have only to use for car storage etc) do degrade, but these are seriously old (>12 years) + I wouldn't use them on roads other than just around the corner to get gas before parking for the winter... and certainly not at any significant speed (<25mph)... note though that all our tires were originally very good quality (michelin, nokian, etc)... ymmv...

one nice thing about Saabs is how stable they are with a blowout... I drove probably 3 exits worth of freeway at 60mph in a c900 after puncturing a sidewall in a construction site, got off, noticed something was wrong... 1 wheel was completely flat!
