"Carry Capacity" depends on economic sophistication

North Korea: 46k square miles, 24 million people, starvation;
South Korea: 38k square miles, 48 million people, abundance;
China in 1960: 600 million people under hard-core government planning to maximize food production, result is starvation;
China today: still the same land mass, 1400 million people under relatively free market economy (compared to what they had previously), plenty food to go around and enough economic surplus to finance our spend-thriftiness here in the US.
Talks of "carry capacity" really makes me queasy, because such Malthusian lines of thinking inevitably leads to the next issue: "living space" or "lebensraum": if there is a pre-ordained carry capacity then an economy can only grow through expanding living space. Such static thinking was what condemned humanity to thousands of years of mutual predation. The genius of Adam Smith and his peers and contemporaries circa 1776 was in discovering and enuciating the fact that real standards of living is dependent on how mutually willing exchanges (trade) is carried out so there can be specialization, not simple aggregation confined to the land carry capacity and hence "lebensraum" ordained, delineated and maintained by governments through violence.
