It's called Ricardian competitive/relative advantage. If Koreans can grow cabbages and apples more efficiently than Thais can grow rice, and vice versa, Korea would export apples and pickled cabbages to Thailand in exchange for rice shipping the other way. Both South Koreans and Chinese can produce enough food to feed themselves, and did so at one time or another within the last couple decades when their economies were less developed than today, but have now chosen not to do so simply because it's more profitable for them to produce other goods for export in exchange for specific types of food import. The meat content in South Korean and Chinese diets have gone up dramatically in the last couple decades . . . they can easily fall back to lower meat content and get enough food to prevent starvation if push comes to shoves and international trade is cut off. It is the government centrally planned nightmare like North Korea that can not feed itself, despite having 30% more land and 50% less people than South Korea.

The field of population biology is heavily biased by the need to get government funding; the surest way is to come up with silly scary forecasts. It's just like novels and movies . . . they do not represent real life; far higher percentage of characters are killed in them than real people in real life, which is too boring to get funding / ticket sales. The alarmist population biologists have been consistently incorrect in their predictions for more than a century.

The synthetic meat allusion shows just how far out of touch with reality the ivory-tower has become. Synthetic meat is quite unnecessary to feed a global population under 600 billion. Chicken farms do not even account for 0.01% of the earth's surface; likewise, fish / seafood farms account for less than 0.0001% of the seas. If for whatever reason one day people like synthetic meats better, for example, if much of the earth's surface is contaminated by nuclear fall out due to all the political machinations trying to control each other, then synthetic meat might get a market angle for being free from nuclear contamination as it is created in the lab environment under ground using specific input. Political coercion is far more dangerous to humanity than anything people are doing through love making.

In the mean time, plenty more food can be procured when food producers get to keep more fruits of their labor instead of letting government bureaucrats telling them what to do. That is reflected in the rapidly rising meat content in the diet all around the world: it takes 10lbs of feed to produce 1lb of meat. The change over is indicative of grain surplus making meat production possible.

"At the moment we're consuming more natural resources than the world produces and nothing indicates that this would change anytime soon."

That's a prima facie silly statement that is typical of the chicken little crowd looking for tax funding (i.e. extorting money from fellow human beings at gun point). Where is that stored manana that is providing the short fall? The fact that oil tankers around the world are being filled up by speculators is indicative that the world is consuming less oil than the amount being produced. The rising oil price in dollar terms is simply indicative of government debasement of the currency.
