It's not "the unifying effect" per se (I bet the "veteran" must have been one from one of the recent divisive wars, not an octogenarian from the last "unifying war," WWII) . . . but an opportunity to look beyond our daily petty squabbles and appreciate the common humanity. The aftermath of a flood, a fire, a hurricane, or a mass shooting rampage will all have that effect after the disaster passes. A war, whether divisive or "unifying" is just another mass shooting rampage, not something to be celebrated or hoped for. Sure, people will be elated and appreciative that they are still alive after the disaster, but while the disaster is on-going, people would kill each other in order to survive . . . just like during Katrina, or during any genocidal / "unifying" war. "Unifying war" is always about unifying in hating someone else; i.e. genocidal war.
What we need is not teaching the young about glorifying wars (state sanctioned mass murders) but the disasterous nature of wars . . . so that people can appreciate the common humanity in all of us without mass deaths.
Incidentally, IMHO, the lack of civility in driving may have something to do with cars becoming safer over the years, so the driver gets an exaggerated sense of immunity. There's the joke about people receiving tickets on periodic basis: after a few years of not getting one, they gradually become more aggressive drivers, and thereby becoming more liable to a new ticket, after which they become cautious drivers again. LOL. Along the same logic, people who drive less safe cars or had close call with or recovered from major injuries in automobile accidents probably would become safe drivers for a long time, if not for life. It's just like the politicians from the WWII generation were much more willing to make compromises to keep peace after living through the horrors of genocidal war.
