Lots of cars (people) competing for the same piece of road doesn't help. Road rage is the result, sorta like 1,000,000 years ago when people were fighting over the gazelle that was just killed.
But I think it's lots of things.
The inability to communicate you mention is one thing and it's part of a list.
People are more and more pre-occupied with other stuff, both personal and work. Intrusion of another driver invokes rudeness: "why are you bothering me?!?"
Modern cars isolate people pretty well. It's easy to tune out the rest of the world and become oblivious. Or just not care. So people will cut you off and not notice. Or care.
And for the most part, many people just don't give a damn in general about anyone else. There's a certain self-centeredness that gets in the way. Lots of people think the world revolves around them.
Also, it's been known for years that driving a car changes how many people act. Increased aggression and rude behavior is common, because there's this solid shell around you.
But as others note, civility has gone away. On the road, in airports, in restaurants, offices, everywhere.
