This situation happens quite frequently where I live. You are merging onto the interstate, which is currently in complete gridlock, but you have about a quarter-mile or more of merge lane. Do you merge at the first opportunity, so that you don't cut off those who are already on the interstate, and not moving? Or do you zoom all the way to the end of the merge lane, effectively cutting in front of other drivers. Judging from people's reactions in traffic, it seems people have different opinions on this. I've seen people block the merge lane by pacing the traffic already on the highway. This seems to piss off those who are behind them.
Here is a youtube video of this happening, and an altercation that occurs. Actually I think these people wanted to cut by on the shoulder. What exactly is the rationale for cutting ahead on the shoulder, or zooming to the end of the merge lane? I am sympathetic to the blocking/pacing thing that people sometimes do.
