Having lived in other parts of the US (rural small towns) and currently living in NYC I can imagine endless debate about this issue. In NYC it's simple. There is no reason not to use all of the tiny street real estate available to you AS LONG AS it's done smoothly, safely, and with an effort to minimize the aggravation. Stuck people on the lane forget about it in 2 seconds and the world keeps turning. Almost every time when I get to drive to rural areas even only as far as Poconos, I see drivers on interstates getting aggravated by drivers using the merge lane to the fullest extent. I understand those morally upstanding citizens are not happy the these merging cars are 'cutting them off' right in front of their eyes but to me there's no correct answer. If I'm on the stuck traffic and see all these merging cars zoom by just to merge all the way ahead and slow the traffic even more it definitely won't make my day or something but I wouldn't get mad at them curse them out to hell or try to physically block them. It's just stupid. Now the cars on the regular lane moving to the merging lane to get ahead only to simply merge back in, that's whole another story.
