Having done waaaay too much commuting in the Boston area, I use a less aggressive version of Boston driving tactics. Works OK everywhere, and doesn't really piss people off. And if it does, I've never had anyone flip me off over it.
But usually I drive in the merge lane with my blinker on, matching speed with the right lane, and just gently edge into the travel lane. There's usually someone who will let me in or back off a bit. If they won't I don't push it, but get in behind them. The assertive move of edging over, plus the blinker shows enough intent, and not actively looking at the other driver may makes them think I don't see them (that's the Boston tactic part), and I find they let me in.
I do this most places and it works well. I rarely stop unless there's no alternative or all the traffic in the merge and right lanes are stopped because I don't want some yahoo to rear-end me or the guy behind me.
