But as I reported then on C900 board, I won't recommend others to go that way: I had been tailgating big TIR trailer keeping about 5-7 feet distance. Actually, they were trailers (plural) since after the next trailer driver got reported by other drivers over CB radio that there was me almost hitting his trailer - and thus really looking like a hijacker - he started doing his best to get rid me off his six and was ruining my eco-rally. Moreover, this also led to increased engine temperature (lack of airflow) and windshield and paintwork excessive wear and tear cause of all that dust and sand hitting me from his wheels.
But if you finally decide to give it a try - DO NOT DO THAT UNLESS YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND THAT YOU MUST HAVE A VERY GOOD REACTION SHOULD THERE SUDDENLY ANYTHING GO WRONG AHEAD OF THAT TRAILER - there's a simple rule of thumb to determine whether you've come to that air bad astern that trailer or not:
open the sunroof and keep your hand out. You'll feel the decreased airflow.
MPG jump goes more with the trailer speed so do not expect significant increase if you're doing 40 mph or so. And trust me: you must be really skillful (and almost nuts) to do that at 60 mph or higher.
Zig
P.S.
if this is still not clear enough (and feel like it's still not clear enough since I'm quite often misunderstood the last days): I do not do this stuff on a regular basis. And I'm not quite proud of myself after that experience - I had to get home after 400 miles trip where I managed to... let's say I made a couple of financial mistakes and mis-estimated my budget.
