if you compare even the official specs for C900 and 9K (the pic below goes for 9K carlsson and the link goes for C900 carlsson) that share the same engines you'll see, that 9K has better mileage and it all comes from aerodynamics. I have to agree that C900 isn't that efficient aerodynamically as many suppose it to be.
But - and it's interesting as well! - notice the better mileage for C900 (against 9K) for the urban test: C900 wins. And know why? The weight. On a steady run it doesn't mean that much as it means on frequent brake-acceleration cycles.
Obviously mpg figures can be increased (or decreased) with an appropriate transmission that is efficient/inefficient by design (btw, even manual tranny isn't 100% efficient!) and/or puts the engine into the sweet-spot in terms of overall efficiency for a given car speed, but they can only be compared on the same model only or if different models share the same transmission (which isn't the case for C900+9K).
