Move to Solid State Drive (SSD)? Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sat, 15 Oct 2011 10:52:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My small business depends on Outlook and Quickbooks, now running on a four-year-old Dell Vostro business computer running XP (sorry, no Quickbooks equivalent in Linux). The Quickbooks file is kept on an external NAS drive with a mirrored backup as well as backed up on Mozy; Outlook files are backed up nightly on Mozy. I have never tried restoring from the backups.
Questions:
1. Are the current SSDs "bulletproof?
2. In an effort to head off the inevitable crash (just had an HDD crash on my old laptop), and since SSDs have dropped in price to "reasonable" (still at a premium compared to disk-based HDDs), does it make sense to preemptively replace the HDD on the Dell with an SSD?
3. Can I clone what's on the HDD to the SSD (including OS)?
4. Any "gotcha"s to be aware of?
