Bill,
here's my experience:
1. No, they are not. But neither are 'old-school' HDDs. Do you want a bullet-proof storage? Then you've got to go to Redundant Array of Independent Disks aka RAID (mode 1, 5, 10 and so forth) whenever certain technology you choose.
2. No, it doesn't. You can never tell for sure that a hard drive is going to fail tomorrow morning or it isn't. The best practice you can go with is to install and study SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) tools.
3. Yes, you can. If certain drive sizes do not match then you may need an extra software for partition resize.
4. Yes, there're some:
4.1 It's really hard to move back to HDD once you tried SSD. It's like... giving a try to V6 biturbo and going back to N/A 4 cylinder.
4.2 You MUST pay attention to the controller that SSD is built about: only SandForce, Intel, Indilix and Samsung controllers should be considered.
4.3 I won't recommend spending on a second-hand SSD.
Good luck,
Zig
