...though I'd like to embellish on Ziggy's analogy and say it's more like going to a huge normally-aspirated V12, i.e. McLaren F1--instant response anywhere all the time, and I'd like to call the best spinning disks small turbocharged inline 4s--not totally depressing when they're in their element, but otherwise, yeuch. If you value your time at all, go whole hog, don't cheap out--buy the manliest, most recent SSD you can possibly afford... no more waiting for the computer, ever. Transforms the experience. I have many ecstatic customers squeezing a couple more years out of an older laptop by going SSD.
Bonus SSD goodness for uber nerds--check out Nimble Storage--I have been working with virtualized infrastructure and shared storage for 6 years and this simply spanks everything else in its market. Big slow cheap HDs on the back end and then data that needs to be super fast is selectively/intelligently cached on smoking fast SSDs. Everything de-duped and compressed on the fly by multi-core procs in the redundant controller canisters. Huge, gnarly reports against multiple SQL databases with 10GB iSCSI NICs absolutely fly. Exchange 2010 sings in ways I never thought I'd see Exchange do. Brilliant software. I call the web UI the "Apple of SANs"--all the options you really need/everything you ever wanted, even things you didn't even know you wanted but now can't live without, and none of the confusing crap that just clutters the thing up. It is SME datacenter nirvana.
