the Kindle is much better for reading
- longer battery life
- easy to hold for one handed reading
- large selection of ebooks (of course you can get the same selection on the iPad with the Kindle app)
The Kindle really is the better choice if you are really getting it to read books.
The iPad is a multi-media device that will also let you read books but it is really heavy compared to the Kindle for reading (you need either two hands or to rest it on something to read).
Of the Kindles available now
- the Kindle (the $79 one with ads) is fine for reading but a pain to use for any typing (e.g. to use the Kindle store from the product)
- the Kindle Touch has a nicer user interface
- the Kindle keyboard has a hard keyboard which is better for typing but makes the device larger and heavier
If she wants to shop the Kindle store on the device I'd get the Kindle Touch
If she shops for books on her PC I'd get the $79 one.
Of course there is the additional issue of 3G or no 3G.
If she wants to buy books anytime/anywhere get the 3G version. The 3G works in most places around the world and for book shopping and delivery is free. If you have a subscription to say the NYTimes they charge extra for delivery outside the US.
All this written, for a serious reader I would get an ad supported Kindle ($30-$40 cheaper), I'd get the 3G version (not essential if you don't travel much), and I'd get the touch version.
