GM is a huge creditor of Saab

The deal that allowed Muller to acquire Saab from GM included GM holding a very large chunk of debt in the form of bonds. I seem to remember over $200 million, but I am not going to out and get the data. You may find references in the archives here from people who followed the business as well as their passion for the cars.
GM will not be paid much on the bonds, but then they were ready to liquidate Saab in the first place before Victor made his attempt. What a saleman, eh? In the midst of the greatest financial meltdown since the Great Depression, he attempts to take a boutique car company, with a pricy set of products, without very much capitalization at all.
The truth is that the only way Saab could have been saved in this scenario, without substantial capital to weather the financial storm for several years, is if customers came in, in droves, to buy new Saabs. They, and many of us, did not.
The idea that GM is liable has no basis in published fact. They were under no obligation to have their engines, car bodies, manufacturing processes, and other technology delivered to a foreign car maker for a song.
There just were no investors prepared to invest in Saab as an independent entity, and that is more than a Chinese manufacturer, it is also the marketplace of customers. They customers have lost out on a vehicle we value, but most wanted something else, whether we agree with them or not.
I am saddened, much as I felt the joy and hope when Victor gave his speeches outside the Saab factory when he saved Saab from the GM liquidation proceeding.
For those of us with Saabs, lets hope that GM keeps the parts, and dealers with trained techs, going long enough for us to enjoy our vehicles, and warranties for cars made before the separation, for a very long time.
