While the newer Saabs may be best in quality to date, The "blah" Saab that GM create made it difficult for them to position Saab in the market place. Given the strong competition that was coming from Audi, BMW, and the Japanese, I can't see how it was wise to create similarly configured Saabs as the competition.
Take for example the post 1998 9-5s, every time I saw one, I saw a Chevy Malibu. If I am comparing a BMW, an Audi, and a Saab that looks like a Chevy Malibu, I think the Saab loses. And that is exactly what has been happening.
Clearly it wasn't enough to improve quality. Quite frankly I think this argument is lacking, given in recent times all car brand have seen improvement in quality (think Hyundai). Beyond the quality improvements, GM needed to maintain the essence of Saab to appealed to the hearts of its loyal fans, while updating the iconic design to attract new buyers (think Posche, Mini, and now Fiat 500).
The demise of Saab is proof that GM was never up to that task. I have no problem with the fact that Saab might be owned by a GM like entity. I have a problem with that entity ownership, having a clear lack of understanding of the brand and how it could have been made better.
The problem with GM was that it felt that it size/market share could drive its success. Well its demise as proven differently. Unfortunately, Saab pay for GM's arrogance.
