Hyundai/Kia is growing like crazy, and Hyundai has a problem (at least in my eyes) of trying to cover too broad of market segment with a single brand. Hyundai has both inexpensive entry level cars and $40K+ near luxury cars.
Toyota, Honda, and Nissan all added a separate upmarket brand to lure deeper pocketed buyers to separate showrooms. Toyota even added a third brand, Scion, to lure entry level buyers. Lately Toyota's strategy has not worked well for them, although it may have nothing to do with having three brands. Neither Honda or Nissan has added a third brand, and both Ford and Chrysler killed their third brands after decades.
Volkswagen is becoming the largest automaker with a broad array of brands but they do not overlap at all. Some VW buyers may cross-shop Audi for giggles and grins but I think the price differential keeps the brands segmented. Many of their other brands are geographically constrained to prevent competition.
This leaves us with only GM with multiple auto brands chasing the same customers with nearly identical vehicles. And this strategy has not worked well since they abandoned their market differentiation achieved through completely separate design and manufacturing operations.
