And since it is econobox the price difference is everything.
Technically the latest sedan and hatchback are not even the same car. The former is based on Micra platform and the latter on Tiida.
In the previous generation both the sedan and the hatchback were both based on Tiida but there was still an intentional huge gap in price maintained for marketing reasons. The sedan was available with smaller 1.6L engine, smaller wheels, manual locks/windows, no AC and no headunit (but with speakers and wiring nevertheless) and started at $9,900. The hatchback was $3-4k more. The price of the current generation (2011+) base sedan went up $1k but the AC is now standard - so it still has very impressive value.
So I totally understand people buying sedans. But why Nissan makes hatchback so much more expensive baffles me.
