After replacing a few door springs over the years, came to a procedure that works without to much drama. Basically the spring shaft, springs, and sheaves are removed as an assembly by running the door all the way up, and then some, so the shaft can be removed from between the bottom of the raised door and door header. This takes tying the door back about a foot further than it normally goes up, and doing whatever else it takes to assure the door will not come down like a guillotine. Think "C" clamps on the track. Since the door is up, the tension on the springs and cables is minimal and the cables can be easily disconnected. From there it is straight forward taking the shaft and components down to work on them on the floor. When putting on the new springs they have to be stretched axially about 2â (spring wire diameter x number of shaft turns full up to down) to allow more turns to wind on as the door goes down. Fasten a rope snugly between the spring end cap and cable pulley, then pull the rope perpendicular from the shaft to stretch the spring. Wify does that without too much audio feed back. A come-a-long works well also.
Local door shops are reluctant to sell springs due to liability, wound springs store a lot of energy that can get loose real quick. Don't try to wind or unwind a spring without the proper torquing bars.
