The lower end of the cables turns on pins and wears. This motion happens at the top of the travel as the lower panel rotates, and the forces are greatly lower at that point. Everything seems to be in an abrasive environment. Exposed grease or oil simply captures dust from the air and makes a grinding paste. I assume that that is why one is not to lube the tracks.
Have those checked. I got a pair for $9
My winding shaft bearings are very rough, so the end plate and bearing assys and center bearing are getting replaced. So the winding rod came down, quite easy to handle, not very heavy as it is a hollow tube. It was rusty everywhere but under the spring. Cleaned up surface rust and wiped with tung oil which will prevent rust and will be dry and will not soak up dust and grit.
