you may be right (where this car has lived for so long in the south) that the car will be abandoned for other reasons before it rusts out now... it depends a lot on the local climate (ie how much salt on the roads for how long)...
we're starting to see common rust areas on 9-5's and og9-3's up here now. I've seen severely perforated og9-3's, though they are fairly uncommon. I have a couple c900s and they're doing ok... places where the rust proofing missed are the only real problem areas. If you search on the c900 bb, there are some great rust restoration threads, where people have welded in fenders floors + other parts... fixing rust is expensive! those cars are very well designed vs rust, but over time it takes its toll + the rust can quickly become structural (unsafe) if one is not careful... our winter beater is a little ratty (due to missed spots, sprayed at a different place that didn't get in all the cavities) but still solid. our 1993 still has perfect paint (ie looks brand new, but oily) in the underbelly spots that unrustproofed c900s are all mostly rotted away... I got to compare with another unsprayed 1993 900, and man, it was a rotted mess!
that said, Saabs hold up way better than many brands. In a 1 mile drive last week, I passed 2 ford focus's (focii?) and both were completely rotted out at the sills: 2 to 3 *feet* long by an inch or 2 high hole under the doors. would not want to get in a side impact! these are cars 10 years old or less... Mazda 3 also rusts like anything! Huyndai/Kia not a lot better. I've seen newish model years (3-5 years old? the "joker" version anyway) of Mazda 3 weeping rust from the tail lights etc!
All that said, it is messy and costs a bit each year, so definitely I agree, one's long term perspective might come into play... obviously I have a much longer term ownership plan than many (I'm the worst customer ever)...
