Yes, performance tires are often not needed for the driving demands of most people. However, during accident avoidance maneuvers, strong steering inputs and max braking, performance tires do have a safely advantage. They also have better braking on wet pavement. Most people do not know how to drive a vehicle properly in extreme events, but are able to do max braking effort stops. [In the Saab Road Atlanta sessions, they point out that most do not even understand how brakes should be used. I have been there twice, once for my self and another time I was there to watch my wife go through the course.]
One problem with tires that have high mileage ratings is that they have low traction to start, then after a few years, they harden from heat and age. Then traction can be terrible, especially on cold wet pavement.
