It may be much more efficient, but it is still hovering at the 50% range, which is better than 55% or 60%, but is still not efficient in terms of producing power.

Exactly how is it more environmentally friendly? Does new corn require less water to grow it? Are farmers using different drain tile systems, or sticking to the old means for diverting water? THe Minnesota River is virtually dead because of all the non-point runoff from farms, particularly corn farms which dominate the area. How does this get addressed?

I don't recall saying we don't already subsidize oil, so what is your point? Minnesota has had an ethanol industry for 20 years, and for most business models, that would make it a mature industry, and one that should be able to stand alone, to either prosper or fail. Left alone, ethanol will fail.

A new plant just opened in Minnesota, one that produces methanol, which is not corn based, but, there is no market for this fuel. THough it is cleaner, produces more energy per unit, and does not require the outrageous water usage to produce.

Since ethanol produces less particulates, but drivers need to use more to drive a mile, where is the breaking point? If, and this is a big if, ethanol gets to the point where it matches gasoline in terms of energy per unit, what have we gained. It seems like we should reach higher.

As a recent grad ('10) from the U of M in Environmental Science, where I researched primarily wind policy, we certainly dug into ethanol too. My research is current.
