Ethanol is a boondoggle of epic proportions, and if it went away tomorrow, we would all be better off for it.
I'll explain.

Corn requires huge amounts of water to grow, which is not a problem in places where there is adequate ground water, places like Minnesota and parts of Iowa and Nebraska. But, in states without that supply, it creates a problem.
Ethanol E 85, is corn based, so now land that was marginal for growing is now being put into production, using water that might be better used somewhere else, except farmers now have incentive to grow corn because they receive subsidies to do so. We pay for those subsidies through taxes.

E85 is incredibly inefficient.
It takes twice the energy to produce a gallon of e85 than that gallon will produce, so you have this fuel source that is a negative balance on energy production, probably not the best business model.

Your car will get worse mileage using e85, and each gallon costs more that regular gasoline, even with the government subsidy. WHy would you want to put that in your car?

Here in Minnesota, ethanol has been part of our culture for over a decade, and the only way around not putting that fuel in my car is by using premium, which does not have to adhere to the mandate that the other grades of fuel use, lucky for me.

So, your car may not be damaged, but taking the long view, many many other things will be damaged, all to support an industry that cannot survive without subsidies and price control.
