Correction,
I stated methanol, when I meant ethanol, and in particular isobutanol, which is the by product produced corn too, but has more energy per unit than ethanol. Trouble is, they cannot legally sell the stuff in Minnesota
Unfortunately the whole industry is like a dog chasing its tail. Corn based ethanol is not great for producing fuel for cars, but cellulose is showing promise except...
The industry put its money on ethanol, now as a state, we are rethinking the whole process, and startups are looking to use other bases for production, like cellulose, or sawdust, or as you mention, many other things. This is a good thing, but with all the production facilities in Minnesota designed for ethanol, a change to another base will be hugely expensive and without a significant distribution system, or the capital to make those changes, this type of ethanol is a long way off.
