(Noel you know who I used to work for, not naming names here.) When I left as part of a "voluntary separation" action that involved over 20,000 employees, many of my cohorts went to work for competitors and brought their accumulated training and expertise with them. The separation packages were aimed at shedding longer-term (expensive?) employees, as the payout for voluntarily leaving also increased with time at the company. Results: many of these competitors have done very well, whereas the original company has become a much smaller shadow of its former self, its stock trading at a fraction of its former price.
