The new employers can better use the productive potential of the same employees. The old employer was probably too laden with old debts and old ways of doing things from a time when it commanded a far more monopolistic market position. Consumers no longer put up with that, so it has to change, including being replaced by a different company with a lighter debt structure.
All corporations eventually die. They come and go for the benefit of the human beings: the owners, the customers and the employees. If any one of the three groups decide it is no longer in their interest to continue, the corporation should fold and disgorge the material and human resources that it is taking up. Any attempt to perpetuate the organization beyond that point would involve coercion and net loss far greater any conceivable gain.
