Note that "the next larger size" can also include an SAE size as well, i.e. a quarter-inch bolt might be just large enough to replace an M6(?) metric bolt. For non-critical applications such as battery hold-downs, this may work for you.
If you strip out a thread in a critical area and can't go up to the next larger size, i.e. something that screws into an aluminum cylinder head like an EGR valve, there are many products specifically made for this such as Helicoils or Timeserts. Basically, you drill out to a larger size, tap the hole to accommodate the outside of the insert piece, and screw in the insert with a special tool; the resulting inner thread is the original size.
