see link for a tap hole / thru hole dimension chart, so you can find the next most useful size. Metric is listed below the imperial chart + you can compare sizes for both. As long as the head is slot or whatnot, it won't make a difference in user experience if you go metric or imperial, but if you use an allen key head... the socket size is often different for metric vs imperial thread... That said, there are some imperial screws with metric socket heads. Anyway, something to consider. Nothing worse than messing up a head because it took imperial + all you have is metric (and nice to keep the cars metric as they are primarily all metric to begin with, and it simplifies the toolkit)...
If you care a lot about using the original screw, helicoil is the solution, but it sounds like it may not be necessary in this case?
