I agree there are times in which there should be little to no general involvement & there are times there should be a lot, (and there are lots of different flavors of that involvement), depending on the circumstances. To categorically say there should or should not be governmental involvement is very short sighted and doesn't take into account a governments need/responsibility to sometimes participate in the economic one to ensure the needs/desires of the people are met, (and yes we could debate for a long time what those proper needs/desires should be). Don't confuse an economic system with a political one, and vice versa... there is interaction but there is a separation.
The economic / political (local-national-international) / environmental circumstances of today are different now than they were in Edison's time, so one can't perfectly equate the two. Not to say there aren't lessons, but just because something worked over 100 years ago does not mean it would categorically work or be desirable today in 100% of the same form.
The REALITY of it is, just like they say about democracy, can be said about capitalism... its the worst possible system, except for all the others. It is not perfect and should not be held up as such. Just like pure democracy does not work & is highly inefficient, (which is why most "democracys" are really "republics" i.e. vote for representatives... could you imagine having a public vote on each and every decision a government has to make?), so is capitalism.
