The dynamics of human society have been repeating / rhyming for far more than 100 years, more like 2500 years and probably longer, and limited only by the availability of recording technology called writing.

For thousands of years, there has been a social scam to preach the sky is falling and only the sacrifice of your individual interest for the benefit of the government-high-priests can save that from happening:

Aztecs high priests taught the sun would fail to rise unless human sacrifices were made;

Middle Ages Europe taught your soul could only be saved by the sound of coins hitting the donation plate; and of course, witch trials, star chambers and the burning stake for anyone daring to ask questions how exactly that would work;

Even the Old Testament is replete with stories of natural disasters taking place because your neighbors (i.e. "you") doing something not approved by the priesthood-government . . . not to mention "the choicest lamb" offered up for sacrifice to God can only be consumed by the priests behind curtains.

Why should it be a surprise that nowadays the government would subsidize research on how and why the sky is falling, and you need to be taxed for the benefit of their cronies to prevent the sky from falling.

At issue is not whether the sky is falling, but how quickly and how soon we will face a new dark age due to the monopolistic waste of resources by the new government-high-priesthood state religion trampling upon individual liberty.
