I have a 2002 VW TDI Jetta. 340K plus miles. Owned it since new. Bought it for one reason, I commute 150 miles to/fm work everyday. Mine is a pre "pump duse" TDI. My TDI has basically been bullet proof. I stay on top of the mainteance and it has run well. Historically, 45 to 47 mpg. I've had higher and lower, but this is about avg. I think the car your looking at is a pump duse.
Go to "http://www.myturbodisel.com". Great website. So is TDI Club, but I've found myturbodiesel to be easier to use with lots of great info.
One thing on the car your considering is maitenance. Engine oil to be sure. Friend of mine runs and shop and we were talking about pump duse's and pre mature cam wear/failure.....his opinion was owner neglect on oil changes. PD's also run a different injection system than mine...little more complicated.
Other than standard maint., if it is manual tranny...how many miles. I had to replace mine at 268K. Fifth gear left the spline. Tranny supplier said I got 68K more than most. Also, these cars tend to have intake get clogged at the EGR valve (like thottle body). Will cause limp mode, i.e., turbo will not spool up until you recycle the key. Anyway, I could go on and on...but bottom line on my car is that it has done excactly what I had hoped on fuel economy and been reliable.
