From what I could determine the 320d Euro spec at 57 mpg is not sold in the US. There is a 330d twin turbo 3 litre engine available...but it won't get 57 mpg. The euro spec version is 2 litre engine. I saw one UK write up talking about over 1000 miles on a tank of fuel. It didn't say what speed they were cruising....which would have an effect on fuel consumption. It sounds like a great car and no doubt better built than a TDI, however, there has to be a large cost difference between the two.
I drove a Volvo V60 turbo diesel wagon in Stuttgart couple of years ago. Nice. It was 5 cylinder....we didn't keep track of fuel mileage because as Yankees we wanted to cruise as fast as we could on Autobahn when it was legal to do so. Diesel options in US are quite limitd when compared to Europe.
