I agree that the EPA numbers are probably about the only way to compare cars without intensive testing of some sort, but do you find also that there can be quite a bit of variation vs real life on the EPA numbers?
I've generally found the 9-5 does better on the highway for me than EPA would suggest, and probably worse around town. For a lot of other cars I've spent sufficient time in, they've tended to do worse (often significantly worse) on the highway than EPA ratings and similar or worse than EPA around town. I wonder how much of that has to do with the turbo, and also how much has to do with aerodynamics/design for higher speeds (europe vs america)? I haven't had a chance to test any higher end European cars in this way to see if that is a commonality.
That said, as I understand it, when Norm says 40mpg, he means getting on the highway + clearing the sid, so pure highway numbers, and iirc 60-65mph? My experience based on fuel receipts + odometer readings has been 32 mpg, traveling 75mph average speed, no cruise, including all stoppages, on long purely highway trips. It is likely that the sid would read higher if I cleared it but I never look at the sid. Even so, that's about 10% better than EPA, and I'm going faster also. It is true that a 9-5 can eat up miles!
