I'd pick it over the TDI. Here in Europe the vast majority of cars being sold are turbo diesels. Among a couple of friends who're indy mechanics, the VWs and Audis have a pretty poor reputation, whereas the BMW diesels supposedly are pretty bulletproof.
When comparing stats, it seems they are typically more powerful and efficient too. Take the new BMW 320D ED - 24.4 km/l mixed cycle (57 mpg), with a 0-62 MPH of 8 secs and a top speed of >140 mph...
