the point of a ss or fixie is simplicity. Less to break + a little lighter too. Most of my friends who went that route did it because of winter: in the coldest temperatures a cassette can stop functioning! Some of them have gone so far as to convert mountain bikes to ss, not as commuters but for riding highly technical trails (I have one friend riding a fully rigid ss titanium 29er over some pretty gnarly stuff, though he has other bikes also). The simplicity is valuable.
I agree though that they don't make a lot of sense if you have a ton of big hills. I went with a 1x9 setup on my race mtb as a best of both worlds: simple, but with enough gears for steep long climbs and faster descents.
I don't necessarily agree that the old bikes are being "ruined" either. Many of the road bikes my friends converted had been thrown in the trash by previous owners and were in various states of disrepair. They look out for older Italian frames often finding some real gems, stripping the rust and broken parts and then powder coating - sure they look a little different, but like new bikes. Basically they get a whole new life rather than a trip to the dump. Imho, that's a good thing...
Noel, I wonder if the not waving thing is akin to if one waved to all car drivers? Where I'm from, there are so many cyclists, I wouldn't think to wave unless I recognized someone (or they waved to me but nobody does).
