Well, I said fixies are a training tool and I enjoyed riding them in hilly areas. I did not mean that they were the most efficient means of riding in hilly areas. In fact, I said casual riders should stay away from them.
By "hilly" I contemplated moderate, rolling hills. I like the workout because you work hard going up, and spin like hell going down. How problematic going up is depends on your climbing ability and gear selection. In a normal fixed gear of say 39x16, many riders can climb a pretty good hill if they work hard (though few would want to do it all day). The bigger problem is descending, because "fixed" means there is no freewheel and you can't coast, so you can get in deep trouble if you don't know what you are doing - the cadence cna easily exceed your ability to keep up. You can control speed downhill with backward leg pressure, but you have to know how to do that.
While I find the fixed fun, nearly all of my riding is on geared bikes. I weigh around 200 lbs and have ridden up Mt. Washington 12 times, so I'm pretty familiar with the benefits of low gears :)
