we rented a mazda5 once. imho, worst of both worlds combination of minivan and econobox. It does get good fuel economy though. rear seats are right against the rear doors + tiny + there is then no cargo room left whatsoever. I would never put my children in the 3rd row in that thing. Can you imagine what happens if you get rear ended?
Facing the rear kids backwards is a bit safer. The volvo wagon with a jump seat might work for a few years while the kids are small, but again, cargo will be an issue. Some sort of minivan/crossover/SUV is probably in your future.
We have friends with 4 kids and they got a honda pilot. looks like a big honkin' suv, but really it is more of a minivan (school bus?). fuel economy is not bad for them. With all the seats up, there isn't really all that much room for cargo.
Actually, if you were looking used, Ford made one (Freestyle?) that was equal parts SUV, Minivan, wagon and seated 6. I rented one once and it was really pretty darn good for that sort of vehicle. It eventually became a TaurusX (iirc), and now is replaced by the Flex? iirc, it was volvo based + could be had with awd, roof rails, etc etc. seated 6.
The reality with 4 kids + activities is multiple subsets will need to go multiple places at the same time, so multiple vehicles is pretty useful, so one could have a minivan/crossover for road trips + still own a smaller fun car for some of the load around town.
