Our present option is an early oughts Durango (gen2). The surprising thing about the car is that with the third row folded up it has less "trunk" space than the Golf we've hung onto. For an extended trip we'd still probably need a rocket-box or a trailer-hitch platform.
The best mileage I've ever seen from the durango (4.7l v8) on the highway is about 22mpg, and that was very conservative long-distance driving. The decrease in gas cost for an improvement in mileage is nominal, but it still grates on me - particularly given the in-town mileage of 14-16. The 5000lbf weight can't really be gotten around...
