We did a Volvo wagon, then an Exploder with just two kids. When they had friends along it got tough.
One thing to remember is that you have to keep all the urchins in back. In some states kids can't ride up front until they are a certain height or 12 years old (or something like that). And kids require a lot of support gear, so it's nice to keep it inside the vehicle. Roof boxes are great for skis and the like, but can be a nuisance for strollers, etc.
If you have car seats (which it sounds as if you will), a minivan or maybe a Tahoe/Expedition is probably the best choice, IMHO. OK, you have to give up the fun to drive factor with either one, but with four kids it matters less and less. You can't hoon around with them in the car anyway.
Although they are pricey, I'd probably go for the Odyssey or Sienna, but would look at the Chrysler Grand Caravan and the Ford Flex. Don't forget that you may need to tow things at some point, so factor that in.
Check out used ones coming off lease to save some bucks. And then get yourself something fun as your daily driver.
