They can be useful when read with some thought. It's important to read the "tone" of the review.
If it's glowing and positive it's less likely to be valid. At the same time, if it has the whine of a complaint that a product isn't perfect, then it's all but useless.
I look for a trend across reviews. If lots of people say similar things over a period of time, then those statements (either positive or negative) may be more reliable. And I try to get them from multiple sources. I look for specific strengths and weaknesses. I do this for lots of products and it has generally worked pretty well, even for stuff like pro-grade video cameras.
On things like tires I want to see at least 12,000 miles on the tires in lots of conditions and in a fairly powerful front drive car that is driven at least "spirited." Example: in buying tires for my 9K I I don't care what someone in a Camry thinks because those cars aren't likely to be driven the way I will drive. But those reviews might be relevant for my easy-driving wife in her 9-5, which I drive 6 times a year. The clowns who say how wonderful their new tires are when they have 2000 miles on them are not worth reading. ANY new tire is gonna feel great.
