I've been using Accolade exterior acrylic over InsulX Prime Lock oil primer on exterior work (including over new putty in windows - have to wait a couple weeks though to achieve proper adhesion and no checking over putty with all that linseed oil)... (though I had never heard of the linseed oil over wood before priming, that trick is useful when reputtying windows: wipe the stickwork of the window with linseed oil before applying putty so the wood doesn't leach the oil from the putty and dry it out prematurely)...

The Prime lock is quite tenacious. P+L recommends using acrylic over their oil based primer (or at least used to). Basically oil based primer is a must for quality exterior work, so it drives me crazy that the Ontario government has banned the stuff due to VOC levels... it's outdoors!! there' plenty of ventilation (wind), and there's not going to be any outgassing into the residence... the environmental cost of painting more often surely outweighs the minor VOC element... anyway, the oil based stuff is NLA in stores here...

I used to swear by oil based top coats outdoors also, but I find the Accolade acrylic to be superior in just about every respect to the P+L Redseal oil I used to use. I never tried the Accolade oil though. Quality acrylic does just fine over oil based primer and the oil based primer adhesion is better in situations exposed to weather... plain latex may or may not?
