GM has well-documented limitations but it was GM and only GM that kept the SAAB brand alive way past the sell-by date. SAAB would not have had the capital to make the necessary changes to the model lineup required to be competitive.
Without GM, SAAB would've been dead a long time ago. Competent managers at another company would've killed it sooner because the product was not viable in the marketplace and no amount of tinkering with an ad campaign ('Born from Jets?' A joke...) would've saved it.
The cost basis in Trollhatten is and was unsustainable. And there's tremendous overcapacity in the European car market. Period. GM simply recognized that the brand was too weak to be saved way too late.
