Sure.
Look up SAAB's annual sales numbers for each year from 1990-2011, double them just for argument's sake, and those annuals are probably not even Toyota's monthly numbers. And the vast majority of those SAAB sales were at great discount -- a.k.a. at a loss.
So, say what you will, SAAB did not have the financial means in any year between 1990 and 2011 to independently develop even one new platform, let alone two or three necessary to increase the product line and broaden their appeal.
Nostalgia and rose-colored glasses only get you so far. I bought three new SAABs between 2001 and 2010 -- all at great discount -- and I too lament the loss of SAAB. However, I suspect many of those that frequent this amazing site got their SAABs as used cars because the price of a new SAAB was prohibitive due to the lack of economies of scale. SAAB, through the use of GM parts and GM platforms, actually benefited because GM's economies of scale allowed SAABs to stay somewhat sticker price competitive.
Of course, there'll always be a lot of woulda, coulda, shoulda with respect to GM and SAAB but I don't think SAAB could've been viable without GM far into the 90s.
