Yes, it is like who do you get to work on your Saab... When dealing with your eyes and your vision, going to a local optometrist vs. a chain or online place, is like taking your Saab to a Saab indy mechanic vs. the local JiffyLube or general mechanic that has not worked on Saabs before.
If your situation is simple and everything goes well, you may come out OK with a chain or online place. But what if there are issues? You mentioned progressive lenses which are sometimes hard to get just right depending on your prescription. An optometrist (as opposed to an optician) is also trained to notice and diagnose other eye health issues that an optician, who is just measuring your vision might miss. (There are also indications in an eye exam that can uncover other potential health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, glaucoma, early signs of macular degeneration, etc.)
Your call....but my vision is too important to me and I want somebody with training dealing with my exams and glasses prescriptions. I order lots of things online, but not medical devices (which glasses and contact lens are).
