certainly the range is lower, and the "supercharge" fillup times are relatively long compared to gasoline...
Clearly however the NYT reporter was embellishing his numbers, and while perhaps Tesla's response doesn't completely note some of the things he did do to improve range, he clearly did a bunch of stuff to intentionally push the car to fall short... looks pretty bad for the NYT imho, assuming the tracking numbers Tesla produced aren't forged (but by publishing them, they would be opening themselves up for legal problems if they weren't being transparent, so I'm inclined to believe that they are accurate)...
I think a car like the S would be pretty darn good if it had a very basic diesel generator in it... ie an electric car, with just enough on-road recharge capability to make the range competitive with what we are used to (200 miles is on the low side, certainly with hour long fill ups in between).
