Sure, a turbo Saab can go fast, but any car can go fast enough to get one seriously killed. Most accidents are at speeds under 60 mph. If an accident is going to happen, I'd rather the kid be in a Saab than the Asian junk that's in that price range. If you can, see if the lad can take one of the Tire Rack Street Survival classes. They raise the bar a little on driving skills. I ran my girls through my own version of that, including skid control. Makes a difference. At the end of the day it's not the car, it's the driver. But you still you want the kid to be in something that can take a hit.
When we did the first car thing, the elder kid wound up in a LPT Saab 9000. This was in 2005. I did some repairs, indy did the rest. It got her through her last year of HS and all of college. Car cost a couple grand from an acquaintance, had some service records. Younger daughter also got a Saab, a '99 9-3 SE. Cost $3500 at the time, but had a perfect service history, owned by a neighbor. As for costs, I really don't think Saabs are much if any more expensive to keep than other cars, assuming equal age and miles. You do need to get one that's been cared for, but otherwise I haven't found them to be bad, and I'm cheap. Saabs are seriously undervalued, so you can get a lot for the money. Get a southern car if you can. I just did that and they can be in much better shape not having had to endure winters.
