The health insurance company generally has a subrogation clause that says that for whoever hurts you (and costs money because of that), they own your cause of action against that person for the bills they pay. That means that if you, say, lose the use of a limb personally, the other guy's insuracne may go to may the insuracne co back, and if that uses it up, your future loss of use, pain and suffering is gone with it. Their paying up front can also get sticky, although i think that generally you are okay (workers comp is a diferent story). I had a deck fall last year and the hospital payouts (not the inflated public bill) totaled about $370,000. Unclear that there is a good defendant on that one, may be. But you would not, if you have a lifetime limit (or a hefty co-pay on your health insurance) want to rely on that. Never, if you can help it, sign on to paying a % of a hospital bill-look at the number above. The % alone would wipe lots of people out. You want lots of coverage, UIM, etc, unless you have no assets anyway and don't care.
