If you carry half a million or more and hit something expensive
(read: a human, like a child) the company will hire an investigator and move agressively to protect its money (and of course the money is there if you are found liable). The flip side, if you have 20/40 and do something horrible (like hit a kid running out from between parked cars), the insurance company will look at the costs and the damage, and will often write a check to the victim for the $20,000 and walk away, leaving you holding the bag for the investigation, the legal fees, and if you lose, as is common in that kind of situation, the other half million. Even if you are completely in the right, the investigation/defense costs will wipe you out, and a judgment most places is good for 20 years. The latter is why you don't let your kid do that either.
